Moscow Design Museum offers Tomsk residents a series of lectures and tours

27 july 2022

The lectures will feature design experts who will be talking about the concept of rational consumption and the idea of a tight link between design and the environment. The principal objective of the educational program is to raise people’s awareness of the various ways and opportunities that exist for recycling plastics, while also introducing them to the international experience in this field and engaging their interest in conscious consumption and in a waste management culture.

The exhibition will be housed in Tomsk State University’s V Glavnom gallery and will run through September 30, 2022. It will feature design items exhibited by more than 40 foreign and Russian designers and design studios. These include both finished projects covering the whole range of items from jewelry and clothing to art installations, and some experimental ideas for re-using end-of-life plastics.

Educational Program’s Schedule:

July 29, 2022 5:30 pm/Room 318 at Institute of Arts and Culture, TSU’s Main Building

Design and ecology are more connected than we’d think. How do present-day designers deal with the complex issues related to the environment? What is the interplay between the fields of design and ecology, what methods and tools for effecting positive change are available to designers, and "how does a point on the line relate to the whole line"? The lecturer will answer these questions based on her personal experience.

September
September 2-4, 2022 (the exact time is TBA)
Lecture by
Pavel Ulyanov, a design historian, expert in history of residential design, collector, gallery owner.
The lecture’s topic: Plastics and Design. The History of Mass Production.
Industrial mass production technologies often stem from ancient technologies and materials. Serially-manufactured items were first produced using materials with high plasticity, or malleability, that allowed them to be molded to shape in reusable molds. Molding technologies have evolved and adapted to new types of materials. The invention of plastics enabled production of affordable consumer goods and seemed to be the ultimate solution to all manufacturing industry’s problems. However, natural resources’ scarcity and emerging threats to the environment have presented new challenges, something the modern world of design seeks to find a solution to.
