Nationwide Contest #яделаючистыйгород (I'm Cleaning Up My City) is now open to contest entries

12 july 2021

#яделаючистыйгород, the All-Russian contest for schoolchildren aimed at enhancing children’s and youths’ environmental literacy has kicked off. The contest is being implemented by the Success Foundation with the support of SIBUR as part of the latter’s Formula for Good Deeds social investment program.

For the second year in a row, the #яделаючистыйгород contest is being held as part of the Recycling Workshop, an environmental project. Last year’s edition of the contest brought in more than five thousand schoolchildren from 53 regions of Russia. The Recycling Workshop promotes the idea of separate collection and recycling of plastic waste by telling schoolchildren about the available recycling options and implications using easy-to-understand formats. Recycling workshops have already been up and running in Tobolsk and Dzerzhinsk, with more expected to spring up by the end of 2021 in Nizhnevartovsk and Tomsk.

The contest is open to anyone between the ages of 7 and 17. Contest entries are invited in the following categories: "Posters and drawings", "Project and research papers", "Tales, poems and essays", "Videos and photos".

Every year, Russia generates about 60 million tons of waste. Polymer waste accounts for only 7% of total waste, but only 7 to 12% of it is recycled. Recycling and returning waste back to the production cycle serves as an important contribution to protecting and preserving the planet's environment. Development of a system of separate waste collection and of the social culture of waste handling plays an important role in advancing the concept of recycling.

As part of the #яделаючистыйгород contest, elementary school students and teenagers will be given an opportunity to discuss their views of the environmental situation and offer their own ideas for using recyclable materials.

Environmental awareness training is an important step toward developing a circular economy. It was with this thought in mind that we decided to provide our support to educational projects in this area within the framework of SIBUR’s social investment program, the Formula for Good Deeds. The #яделаючистыйгород contest that targets schoolchildren is a very important initiative because awareness of one’s personal responsibility for the cleanliness of one’s street, city and the whole planet is something that is established at childhood. We hope that the contest will teach many students not only to treat nature with greater care, but also to think about the contribution that separate waste collection and recycling make to preserving the environment, Stanislav Kasparov, Director of SIBUR Regional Business Support, noted.

Eco-friendliness is finally getting trendy, and I think our main objective is to support this trend. Fortunately, children tend to absorb new information better than most, and I hope that soon we will reach a point where useful and proper eco-habits will become second nature to them. The Clean Country Association and its members have been involved in environmental education for a long time, and we have learned that projects such as this one are the best way to teach schoolchildren how to take good care of nature, Ruslan Gubaidullin, Executive Director of the Clean Country Association, commented.

To take part in the contest, one needs to go to the project’s website at http://workshop-recycle.ru/, fill out an application form and submit one’s entry under one of the available categories. Contest entries will be accepted until September 19. On September 29, a council of experts will identify the contest’s winners who will receive honorary diplomas and prizes from the organizers and the project’s partners. The winners’ list will be published in the Recycling Workshop group on VKontakte.
