Successful Coach is now in Tobolsk thanks to SIBUR’s support

10 december 2021

The Association for Supporting Pedagogical Education in Tyumen Oblast and Tyumen State University’s Tobolsk D.I. Mendeleev Pedagogical Institute (a branch) have developed and launched, with support from SIBUR's social investment program the Formula for Good Deeds, the Successful Coach, a program for basketball coaches.

Successful Coach is an electronic platform for diagnosing and developing coaching qualities and skills that was created by students and professors of Tobolsk D.I. Mendeleev Pedagogical Institute (a branch of TSU). Other participants of the effort included physical education teachers, coaches of children's and youth’s sports schools, coaches of professional teams, the team of the Institute’s Department of Pedagogy, Psychology and Social Education.

This resource gives everyone who is planning to commit or has already committed their future career to training athletes an opportunity to measure their current level of professional and personal competencies. Access to the testing and educational program is free. The test can be taken by anyone wishing to determine their current level of professional and personal competencies and avail themselves to training materials at a convenient time. Those who complete the testing and the training course provided on the Successful Coach platform will receive certificates of completion.

Successful Coach is part of Going Vertical, a sports outreach program aimed at developing coaching competencies of Russia’s basketball coaches. The goal of the project is to build a profile of the "ideal coach" and to help professional coaches get closer to this ideal.

The Going Vertical program consists of several phases:

  • A review and analysis of domestic and international practices of coach training and certification using the focus group method in order to build the profile of a successful coach to benchmark one’s psychological and teaching qualities against and to suggest ways for enhancing them.
  • Testing this methodology in three pilot cities: Blagoveshchensk (Republic of Bashkortostan), Moscow, and Tobolsk. The study involved 2,000 respondents: physical education teachers, coaches of children's and youth’s sports schools and of basketball teams.
  • Digitalization of the methodology and development of the electronic version of the Successful Coach program.

This methodology for assessing coaches’ professional and personal qualities developed by the authors of the Successful Coach project will be used as one of the elements of the SIBUR’s Basketball School project, as well as during intensive basketball training sessions to identify, support and develop talented athletes. These projects have been implemented jointly with the Talent and Success Educational Foundation (SIRIUS) and the Russian Basketball Federation.

SIBUR’s Basketball School is a country-wide social project aimed at supporting children's and youth’s basketball in the country’s regions. Over the five seasons of the project’s existence, more than 4,800 budding basketball players have taken part in its sessions, of whom more than 250 received invitations to attend the #SIBURCAMP camp. Between 2018 and 2020, 1,100 coaches completed the program of the educational module in a face-to-face format. The distance-learning Coach 2.0 SIBUR program reached out to an additional 5,200 people.

2021 saw the project hold its first-ever inclusive program including regional master classes for children with special education needs and unified games where athletes with and without disabilities played on the same teams. In addition, a coaches' education program was implemented together with Special Olympics focusing on how to teach basketball to children with special developmental needs.
