Dzerzhinsk to host SIBUR's Science Sessions featuring Inventive Engineers program

27 may 2021

On June 7 through 11, a new series of educational Science Sessions for school students aged 9-12 interested in science and technology-related disciplines will be held in Dzerzhinsk. This project is being implemented with the support of SIBUR provided within the framework of its corporate social investment program, the Formula for Good Deeds, together with Dzerzhinsk Administration’s Department of Education.

The Inventive Engineers program seeks to help student acquire engineering design skills, promote mathematics and physics, as well as train and further improve the competence of school teachers in setting up hands-on engineering training programs for schoolchildren.

In the course of their classes the students will be able to work with the Livetronic construction set developed by Gekkon, a children's science and technology creativity club. Each participant will get an individual set of equipment necessary for hands-on activities . As part of the training course, the students will assemble an Asimov's robot, a rubber-motor car and a catapult. In addition to the master classes, Science Sessions’ participants attend lectures and take part in contests, tests and quizzes.

Prior to the project’s start, participating teachers will receive training focusing specifically on the course’s curriculum.

Classes for students aged 9 through 12 will be taking place on June 7 through 11 at five schools.

This engineering course provides students with an opportunity to not just get introduced to the world of inventions, but to also build functioning models with their own hands, Anton Zaitsev, the Inventive Engineering program’s curator, commented. At the heart of their projects are specially prepared parts of the design that have to be finetuned using tools and hands-on experiments.

The value of this course is in that our children will have an excellent opportunity to not only attend fascinating scientific lectures in physics, mathematics, and engineering, but also to acquire hands-on engineering skills, noted Olga Paleyeva, Director of Dzerzhinsk City Administration’s Education Department. This will help children understand what an engineer's job is about and, perhaps, make a decision about picking this profession as their future career path.

This year's Science Sessions will be held in eight cities where SIBUR operates. Dzerzhinsk will be the first city to host them, and following that the program will also be held in Blagoveshchensk (Bashkortostan), Voronezh, Gubkinsky, Noyabrsk, Nyagan, Pyt-Yakh, and Tomsk.
