Going Vertical, an educational project for basketball coaches in the regions has kicked off

The Association for Supporting Teachers' Education in Tyumen Oblast, supported by SIBUR’s social investment program "The Formula for Good Deeds", has launched a project titled Going Vertical seeking to foster development of basketball coaches in Russia’s regions.

The project aims to develop a psychological and pedagogical profile of professional and socio-psychological competencies of a successful basketball coach. The model will then be used as the basis for diagnosing the current level of these competencies in coaches and will allow to chart a personalized development trajectory for each coach taking into account their strengths and development needs.

The first stage of the Going Vertical project included holding focus groups to determine the competences profile of a successful coach. The research was conducted by a team of experts from the Tobolsk Pedagogical Institute in cooperation with the Russian Basketball Federation and with participation of Sergey Bykov, an Honored Master of Sport, supervisor and ambassador of SIBUR’s programs seeking to develop basketball in the regions. The focus groups were attended by physical education teachers from secondary schools, coaches from children's and youths’ sports schools and professional basketball league teams, as well as by university students who are aspiring future sports teachers.

The next stage of the project will include developing a methodology for conducting a psychological and pedagogical evaluation of professional and personal characteristics of a basketball coach. Its results will help to determine the focus of coaches’ subsequent training and development in accordance with the competences model of a successful coach.

This methodology will be tried out in three cities where SIBUR has operations: Blagoveshchensk (Republic of Bashkortostan), Moscow, and Tobolsk. The research will involve 2,000 respondents: physical education teachers, coaches of children's and youths’ sports schools and basketball teams. The methodology will be used as part of the Educational Module for Coaches of SIBUR’s Basketball School project, as well as in training of coaches as part of the athletic programs for school students that SIBUR has been implementing together with educational centers in the regions operating under the Sirius center’s model.
