Grounds of ZapSibNeftekhim are home to more than 40 species of birds

26 may 2021

ZapSibNeftekhim hosted an ornithological survey conducted as part of the Land of Lapwing, a comprehensive bird conservation project implemented within the framework of SIBUR's social investment program, the Formula for Good Deeds. During a week-long survey, ornithologists performed a thorough study of the company's grounds with a focus on birds’ habitats and nesting sites.

All in all, we counted 45 species of birds living on the facility’s grounds. Our team spotted 25 nests, including 19 nests of lapwings, 2 nests of common redshanks, 1 nest of a godwit, and 3 nests of shovelers. We are happy to note that these grounds continue to provide excellent nesting conditions for waders and waterfowl, Evgeny Zhuravlev, ornithologist and expert of the Formula for Good Deeds social investment program, commented.

The site of ZapSibNeftekhim has been hosting ornithological surveys since 2019 for the purpose of monitoring changes in the populations of the bird species. Each year, lapwings and other species of birds return here for nesting, while the total number of species encountered is steadily growing instead of dwindling. This year, the list of bird species spotted here for the first time included the following forest birds, as well as near-water and waterfowl species: Eurasian wigeon, mallard, garganey, common greenshank, wood sandpiper, ruff, common sandpiper, little ring plover, bluethroat, Eurasian wryneck, Western yellow wagtail, and many other species. Ornithologists surveying the grounds of ZapSibNeftekhim have been fortunate to spot a golden eagle, the species included in the Russian Federation’s Red Book of Endangered Species.

We have been conducting these ornithological surveys for the third straight year. Regular surveys are important to be able to properly assess the level of comfort for birds inhabiting and breeding on the company's grounds. We are glad that year in and year out lapwing and other bird species choose ZapSibNeftekhim’s grounds as their nesting habitat. To ensure the safety of birdlings, special warning signs have been posted in close proximity to the nests, and a special awareness campaign for employees has been conducted, Elena Belskaya, Head of ZapSibNeftekhim LLC's Government Relations Department, noted.

As part of an experiment and following all necessary precautions, this year ornithologists set up several camera traps to monitor the development of the shoveler’s ducklings and to monitor other species of birds living on the shore of the lake located on the facility’s grounds.
