Svobodny’s <i>Freedom of Taste</i> gastronomy festival, a delicious, vibrant, and exciting event, was held on August 30 with the support of SIBUR's <i>Formula for Good Deeds</i> social investment program and with over 2,800 visitors in attendance. That day saw the city’s Lenin Square getting transformed into a major festive venue where all those present, from a toddler to a senior, could select an activity to the best of their liking, something that resonated with their innermost wishes, talents, and preferences.
</p>
<p>
Vladimir Konstantinov, the city’s mayor, graced with his presence the festival's grand opening. In his opening address, <b>Mr. Konstantinov</b> <b>spoke thus</b> to those in the audience:<br>
<i>"I am delighted by the fact that the very first </i>Freedom of Taste<i>
gastronomy festival is being launched in our city. We are happy to welcome its organizers and would like to thank SIBUR, the Amur Gas Chemical Complex, and the company's social investment program for organizing all of their activities that are becoming a good tradition. May this gastronomy festival grow into yet another shared and positive occurrence."</i>
</p>
<p>
Andrey Paramonov, First Deputy Director of the Amur Gas Chemical Complex, wished the residents of Svobodny an enjoyable day. As he was greeting the city's residents, <b>Mr. Paramonov noted:</b>
</p>
<p>
<i>"SIBUR is a socially responsible company, and we have been working diligently and consistently to make life in Svobodny comfortable and exciting for its residents. As for the gastronomic festival, it is yet another great reason for people to socialize, exchange their favorite culinary recipes, have a great time, and enjoy tasty food and good music."</i>
</p>
<p>
The festival's thematic zones were spread across the entire space of the square. Its food court became one of the event’s most popular spots. This was where one could sample Russian, European, and Oriental cuisines’ dishes to the uplifting tunes of live music performances. Charcoal-grilled dishes enjoyed a particularly high demand from passers-by.
</p>
<p>
The most educational and zesty platform of the festival was – and justly so! – the area assigned to hosting cooking masterclasses that featured celebrated chefs from the nation’s capital sharing their trade secrets.
</p>
<p>
<b>Alexander Bakanov</b>, a pastry brand chef with the Istanbul-based <i>Talim</i> group, known for its collaborations with top Russian and Turkish pastry schools, gave an open lesson in preparing an exquisite chocolate dessert with a crunchy inner layer and a bold passion-fruit filling. He offered a tip on how to achieve a perfect balance of textures, highlighted some of the nuances of handling chocolate, and explained the role of a spectacular presentation.
</p>
<p>
Those who attended the masterclass on making salads and appetizers, taught by <b>Natalia Leukhina</b>, founder of the <i>Myaso i Khleb </i>gastrobrand from Yoshkar-Ola, mastered the art of preparing for a fragrant salad featuring smoked sausages, vegetables, and a spicy dressing, as well as the recipe of a tender avocado mousse.
</p>
<p>
An original lecture by <b>Vladislav Alekseev</b>, chef of Moscow’s Chef’s Table restaurant, fermentology chef at WhiteRabbit Family, and winner of the <i>Chef of the Year</i> award from <i>Styl. Gourmet, 2023</i>
became another bright element of the <i>Freedom of Taste</i> festival's educational program. Mr. Aleskeev interacted with professionals representing the Amur region's restaurant industry and enthusiasts of gastronomic experiments discussing about farming and locally-sourced produce while sharing his secret techniques of fermentation.
</p>
<p>
<i>"I gave a talk about modern concepts of restaurant, their uniqueness, and on how the profession of a chef is growing broader and turning into an art of itself. As part of my gastronomic show, I cooked dishes using local produce that is grown and farmed locally. The residents of Svobodny are amazing: they are extremely responsive and eager to help. Which made my job of sharing my cooking techniques particularly pleasurable. I am confident that for some of them, the festival’s events will become a starting point for further growth,"</i> <b>Alekseev commented</b>.
</p>
<p>
Passions and the spirit of competition reigned supreme at the fest’s culinary battle zone, an area where contestants vied to establish whose salad recipe was the tastiest or whose dessert was the most unorthodox. Every detail counted: the recipe itself, the speed of cooking, presentation. All performances were refereed by a strict and impartial jury. The salads were so good that the referees chose to reward four of the best cooks.
</p>
<p>
The dessert battle was won by <b>Anait Gevorgyan</b>, who wowed the experts not only by her speed of cooking but also by the story behind her dessert recipe and the originality of its presentation.
</p>
<p>
<i>"My daughter and I went out for a walk to the festival’s grounds and learned that a gastronomic battle would be taking place here. Somehow, by a sheer stroke of luck a spot in the competition’s lineup became vacant, and we managed to sign up for the battle. I am really fond of cooking and treating my family to delicious meals. My family's favorite dish is </i>dolma<i>. But I wanted to try my hand specifically at making sweet desserts. I am very happy about emerging as the winner! It's a wonderful thing that, thanks to SIBUR, our city is becoming more fun to live in. I am especially thankful for the accessibility arrangements that had been made for the festival’s visitors. I have a special needs daughter and we were able to visit all sites of the festival today without a problem. It was easy to get around everywhere. She also enjoyed it very much," </i><b>the contest’s winner noted</b><i>.</i>
</p>
<p>
Svobodny is a city of creative people of action. This was once again proven by the attendees of the cookery and art classes. An incredible atmosphere was created here on the day of the festival: the participants created unique apron designs, painted spoons with interesting patterns, made decorative items using polymer resin, and ornated gingerbread cookies with colorful icing patterns.
</p>
<p>
The youngest residents of Svobodny had a great time on the children's playground were diverse and fun activities, as well as entertaining and educational quests, were held for them throughout the day. The little ones especially enjoyed the company of their animators and the presence of a life-size Kung Fu Panda doll. The children were also treated to delicious ice cream, cotton candy, and popcorn.
</p>
<p>
Those of the participants who represented the professional catering sector noted that the gastronomy festival was indeed a truly interesting and beneficial event. It also meant useful new experience for <b>Gaik Mkhitaryan </b>and<b> <i>Barbecue Party</i></b>:
</p>
<p>
<i>"We had prepared for the event really thoroughly by stocking up on the needed supplies, and so we hadn't expected that we would run out of everything by the evening. Despite the occasional drizzle, people kept coming in. We think that our first experience with taking part in an event of this magnitude was a success and we would be happy to do it again. The event’s organization was top-notch, which helped make our job easy and pleasant. There was a festive ambience, everyone was in a good mood. We were very happy to take part in the </i>Freedom of Taste<i> festival."</i>
</p>
<p>
The day’s program ended with a raffle. At all of the fest’s sites, its visitors could draw a ticket and see how lucky they could get. In total, there were two rounds of prize-drawings, each of them identifying five winners, while the three luckiest ones got the super awards – kitchen appliances that will be useful at their kitchen.

<b>Elena Snezhko, head of SIBUR's Formula for Good Deeds social investment program, commented:</b> <br>
"Svobodny’s hosting of the <i>Freedom of Taste</i>
gastronomy festival was the first occurrence of this kind and it became a truly shining part of this summer’s program of activities. The festival united the city's residents by offering them so many unforgettable moments and heartwarming emotions. In addition, the festival brought together representatives of the Amur region's restaurant industry, local farmers, and the capital’s chefs, thus becoming an important platform for experience sharing and for inspiration."
