Tyumen Oblast’s School Students to Get Grants from SIBUR for Conducting Forest Research

13 may 2021

SIBUR has taken stock of the results of the 2nd grant contest for Tyumen Oblast’s schools and school forestry teams. The contest’s experts have picked 6 research projects focusing on forest research, conservation, protection and restoration. The contest was carried out by SIBUR together with Tyumen Oblast’s Forestry Department as part of the Tobolsk Forest project implemented under the auspices of the Formula for Good Deeds, SIBUR’s social investment program.

Judging by the much-improved quality of applications that were submitted this year, the positive effect of the Tobolsk Forest Project’s educational program that we have been implementing for the third year running, is clear to see. Our congratulations to the winners! We expect that our region's school students, thanks to the support from the Formula for Good Deeds, will be able to carry out excellent research and to present their results appropriately at the regional and national-level contests, Elena Belskaya, head of ZapSibNeftekhim LLC’s Government Relations Department, said.

The contest’s jury was made up of representatives of SIBUR, experts from the Formula for Good Deeds program, Tyumen Oblast’s Forestry Department, and the Federal Center for Further Education and Recreation and Rehabilitation for Children (formerly, the Federal Children's Ecology and Biology Center).

The choice we had to make wasn’t at all an easy one, because there were a lot of interesting entries. Now the main thing for the winners is to see their plans materialize. I am sure that under the guidance of our region’s experienced educators these school students will be able to do just that quite successfully and do a lot of good to the forests of Tyumen Oblast, Leonid Ostroumov, Director of Tyumen Oblast’s Forestry Department, commented

Support in the form of grants will be provided to 6 projects:

  •  In Tobolsk, students from Secondary School No. 2 will study the flora of the trail leading up to an ancient pine tree.  The trail had been cleaned up thanks to a grant provided by SIBUR last year.

  • Students of Komsomolsky’s Secondary School (Urban District of Zavodoukovsk) will study forest animals in the vicinity of Komsomolsky and the village of Shchuchye.

  • Students of the Setovskaya Secondary School (Tobolsk District) will continue to develop their school's arboretum and study its species’ make-up.

  • Young researchers from Klepikovo’s secondary school (Ishim District) will study how various tree species propagate by cuttings.

  • Students of the N.D. Litzman Gymnasium (Tobolsk) will research the details of how cultivated and wild plants grow on the school’s grounds.

  • Active participants of the Lesovichok school forestry team (Uvatsk District) will lay out an experimental plot to assess the survival rate of seedlings.

We have been involved in the development of our school’s grounds for years. The project called "A Blooming Gymnasium – SCIENCE" will help us evaluate the impact of various environmental factors on our local vegetation. Our work’s results will definitely be useful in helping out students learn more about the diversity of plant species in our region. And, of course, we intend to present our results at scientific and academic conferences, Larisa Matveeva, teacher of chemistry and biology at N.D. Litzman Gymnasium, noted.

Our congratulations go out to the winners and we wish them good luck with their research!
