At the end of May, <a href="https://www.formula-hd.ru/news/v-nizhnevartovske-posledniy-den-vesny-byl-otmechen-prazdnikom-byerdinga/">Yugra’s first birding tournament</a> was held in Nizhnevartovsk. The birding contest was conducted as part of <strong>the </strong><a href="https://www.formula-hd.ru/projects/nature/chibisi/">Land of the Lapwing</a><strong> project</strong>, carried out with the support of SIBUR’s <i>Formula for Good Deeds</i> social investment program and organized with the assistance of the nonprofit <i>Birds and People </i>partnership.

The rally point chosen for gathering the birders was the park at Lake Komsomolskoye, a true urban oasis in a city’s midst. Despite the tournament’s rather compact area, the 15 competing teams comprised of school students and nature enthusiasts managed to spot 16 bird species with many of the sightings coming as a true surprise to even the most experienced ornithologists.

Sightings of the ruff and the gadwall came as a true surprise as these two species had not featured in the recommended preliminary list. These discoveries brought the team 8 extra points each.

Another unexpected encounter was the sighting of a European stonechat, a migratory bird that most likely got delayed on the way to its traditional nesting grounds.

As for the more familiar species at Lake Komsomolskoye, the rally’s contestants identified the mallard, Eurasian wigeon, common tern, two gull species, as well as several passerine species.

Obukhova, a Candidate of Biological Sciences, consultant for the <i>Birds and People</i> partnership; and M. Podsokhin, winner of the Capital’s Cup in birding, photographer, the creator and administrator of the <i>Sterkh</i> system.
