Plastics and Art. The Fantastic Plastic exhibition to open in four cities across Russia

22 march 2023

Fantastic Plastic, an exhibition of works of art by foreign and Russian designers, organized by the Moscow Design Museum with the support of SIBUR's Formula for Good Deeds social investment will alternate between four Russian cities in 2023: Svobodny, Krasnoyarsk, Kazan, and Nizhnekamsk. Admission will be free to all visitors.

Fantastic Plastic seeks to promote separate collection, recycling and reuse of plastic waste. The project includes a mobile exhibition of artworks and photos thereof, as well as an educational program for the general audience. The visitors of the exhibition will be offered a chance to see more than 40 works of art made of recycled plastics by Russian and foreign designers. These include hour glasses filled with pellets and samples of recycled polymers by British designer Brody Neale; toy cars by Dutch designers Renaud de Klerk and Marein Duvekot; furniture produced by Belgian company Engel and a St. Petersburg-based studio Eburet; rain ponchos by Galina Larina and stylish jewelry designed by Ekaterina Lukyanova. All these household items, accessories, as well as many other daring and experimental offers all converge around one common idea – that of giving a second lease on life to plastics that have the potential of being 100% recycled, both for one-time use and for multiple re-use. The artists saw that plastics represent a perfect material for artwork being as lightweight, inexpensive, durable and versatile as they are. Plastics have become an integral part of man’s life and have been put to good use in almost all areas of human activity. Since the 1950s, mankind has produced about some 6 billion tons of plastics, but the habit of getting plastic waste recycled is only now beginning to get traction. That said, separate collection and recycling of plastic waste can help conserve natural resources and reduce the amount of waste dumped at landfills.

As part of the exhibition’s educational program, its visitors will be able to attend lectures focusing on conservation and the experience of working with recycled plastics, take part in children's master classes and much, much more.

We have been supporting implementation of the Fantastic Plastic project in the cities where SIBUR has operations since 2019. This exhibition has already been held in Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow, Voronezh, Perm, Ufa, Tobolsk, Tomsk, and Omsk. Fantastic Plastic not only helps make pastimes of our residents so much richer, but it also draws people’s attention to the issues of responsible consumption and to the culture of recycling. This project represents yet another step towards achieving our cities' greater sustainability, a step that the company is taking together with local residents, Elena Snezhko, head of the Formula for Good Deeds social investment program, commented.
