Supported by SIBUR, Tobolsk hosts Fantastic Plastic, an exhibition by Moscow’s Design Museum

22 october 2021

SIBUR and the Moscow Design Museum opened an eco-design exhibition called Fantastic Plastic. The exhibition that is housed at Tobolsk’s Center for Creative Initiatives features works of art by more than 40 foreign and Russian designers and design studios including everything from jewelry items, to clothing and shoes, to art installations created from recycled and reused plastic. Designers from the Netherlands, China, Germany, Kenya, Russia and other countries exhibited their artwork at the exhibition. The exhibition will be running through November 18, 2021. Admission is free of charge.

On the opening day, Olga Druzhinina, an art historian, gave a curator’s tour of the exhibition featuring artwork by foreign and Russian designers and design studios. These include both projects that have already been implemented and some experimental ideas for reusing recycled plastic. These projects, despite their diversity in scale, technique and function, have one thing in common: their authors treat recycled plastic as an ideal medium that is easy to work with and that offers unlimited opportunities for seeing one’s creative plans through to fruition.

The ambition of the Fantastic Plastic exhibition is to use examples from the world art and from the Russian experience to educate people about the opportunities that recycling and reuse of this material offer.

As co-organizers of the Fantastic Plastic exhibition, we share with our partners the basic principles of socially responsible behavior of corporations and individuals alike. We hope that every visitor of the exhibition will be able to look at these items and at recycling of plastic from a different perspective and will remember that this material can be given a new lease of life and reused many times over, Elena Belskaya, Head of ZapSibNeftekhim’s Department for Government Relations and Social and Economic Projects, commented.

An important part of the exhibition is its educational program intended for museum practitioners. Its objective is to introduce the latter to the basics of constructing a museum showroom. The lecture part of the program covers a variety of theoretical aspects: from a foray into the history of designing a unified object-spatial environment all the way to the principles of selecting exhibits. The practical part of the mini course covers the basics of creating and promoting an exhibition project: developing the concept and texts, interacting with the workspace, visual and graphic support, engagements with partners and volunteers. One can enroll in the program by request at info@moscowdesignmuseum.ru

An audio guide and a brochure have been produced for the exhibition.
