The region’s first forum of volunteers was held on April 23 at SIBUR's Tomsk site. The forum also became the first-ever carbon-neutral event to be held in Tomsk Oblast with the involvement of government bodies and representatives of businesses, volunteering organizations, and youth initiatives.

Vladimir Mazur, Governor of Tomsk Oblast:
"Kindness and empathy are in the Russians’ DNA. This became particularly evident during the coronavirus pandemic when volunteers selflessly worked in the “red zone”, risking their lives to save others’. There are also volunteers who work on the front line as we speak. On behalf of all residents of Tomsk Oblast and on my own behalf, I want to thank you all for your empathy and kind deeds. Volunteering and kind-heartedness will always be viewed as valuable assets by our people."

Initiated by Tomskneftekhim, Tomsk’s first volunteering forum became a striking example of the synergy of the efforts of government, businesses and communities in tackling matters of social signifcance through the prism of ESG strategies.

Ramil Ryabikov, General Director of Tomskneftekhim:
"Experience-sharing and joint efforts undertaken together with the region’s top enterprises is more than just a step towards successful completion of more ambitious projects. This is also proof that by working together and staying united we can really make a difference. The forum did not just gather like-minded individuals, it spurred on a dialogue on the topic of how volunteering can serve as a bridge between companies, their employees and local residents, uniting everyone around universal values. This is not just an event, but the beginning of a new era of responsible cooperation. Volunteering, caring for one’s environment, alliances with the government and our industrial partners are the essential elements of SIBUR's Sustainable Development strategy."

Representatives of Gazpromneft-Vostok, Gazprom Transgas Tomsk, Sber and various non-profit organizations also shared their respective volunteering experiences.

The first volunteering forum became Tomsk Oblast’s first event without a carbon footprint. Its greenhouse gas emissions will be offset by means of allocating carbon credits/units that had been earned by SIBUR as a result of implementing its climate projects and verified in conformity with internationally-accepted standards and practices.

Ramil Ryabikov, General Director of Tomskneftekhim:
"The forum’s carbon footprint will be calculated after it comes to an end, taking into account all relevant factors such as the number of attendees, routes travelled, logistics, energy consumption, catering, and waste management. Based on this information, we will determine the number of GHG emission reduction units required for offsetting the footprint. The carbon footprint from the Forum will be calculated by an official body responsible for validation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions."

Additionally, sustainable solutions were implemented as early as at the stage of getting ready for the forum to minimize its impact on the environment. The forum’s attendees were carried by environmentally friendly vehicles: the company’s new corporate buses running on natural gas (methane). All plastic waste collected at the event will get recycled: a reverse vending pfandomat machine (a receptacle for depositing plastic packaging to be recycled) was recently installed at Tomskneftekhim specifically for such purposes.

Background:

The regional volunteering forum was organized by Tomskneftekhim (a part of SIBUR) with the support of Tomsk Oblast’s administration, non-profit organizations and SIBUR's Formula for Good Deeds corporate volunteer program.

SIBUR is the largest petrochemical company in Russia, and one of the fastest growing companies in the petrochemical industry globally. SIBUR's unique vertically integrated business model has enabled it to produce highly competitive products that are used to manufacture consumer goods and automobiles, in the construction and energy sectors, as well as in the chemical industry and other industries around the globe. SIBUR recycles the by-products of oil and gas recovery thus contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions resulting from their combustion. SIBUR takes ESG criteria into account across all aspects of its activities.
