From 12 to 14 June, the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan hosted the fourth professional programme for book culture workers – the "Books Change Cities" school-conference, created with the support of SIBUR's "Formula for Good Deeds" social investment programme.
</p>
<p>
<b>Elena Snezhko, Head of SIBUR's "Formula for Good Deeds" social investment programme:</b>
</p>
<p>
<i>
"This year, the 'Books Change Cities' school-conference brought together specialists from ten cities where SIBUR operates and showed just how great the demand is for live professional dialogue in the book industry. For us, this is not just an educational project – it is an investment in people who are changing the cultural climate of their cities. Three intense days in Kazan gave participants new tools, contacts and inspiration, and we are confident that this experience will be reflected in their work across the country."</i>
</p>
<p>
The school has been running in Kazan since 2023 and traditionally takes place alongside the "Smena" Summer Book Festival. "Books Change Cities" is an educational platform that brings together librarians, bookshop and cultural institution staff, publishers and other creative industry specialists who influence the development of the contemporary literary world.
</p>
<p>
Each year, the main theme of the school changes to reflect current issues. In 2026, the programme's main focus was marketing, communications, PR and social media in the book industry. Through a series of discussions and strategic sessions, guests discussed how to strengthen their presence on social media, how to build effective communication with people and tell compelling stories, what marketing is and why it is necessary for book projects, how artificial intelligence can be used when working with books, and much more.
</p>
<p>
Speakers in the programme included journalists and bloggers, marketing, communications and AI experts, heads of book institutions and advertising agencies working in culture. Among them were Daria Angelo, CMO of Yandex Books; Ilmira Gaysina, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Forbes and head of the "30 Under 30" ranking; Ksenia Prikhotko, philologist and influencer; Kirill Mayevsky, co-founder and programme director of the Smena Centre for Contemporary Culture and Executive Director of Ad Marginem Publishing House; Arkady Romanov, historian and host of the podcasts "On Repeat" and "The Last Romanov"; Regina Faskheeva, founder of the Fragency SMM agency; Alina Khangareeva, founder and director of the Vzlet communications agency; Ilnur Sharafeev, head of advertising at the Fragency SMM agency; Mansur Akhmetshin, editor-in-chief of Enter; and others.
</p>
<p>
The conference began with an introductory online meeting with participants on 8 June 2026 and continued with in-person events on 12–14 June.
</p>
<p>
The school participants included 13 librarians from cities where SIBUR operates, including Blagoveshchensk, Voronezh, Gubkinsky, Nizhnekamsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Pyt-Yakh, Tomsk, Tobolsk and Svobodny. In addition, 27 cultural workers from across the country took part in the programme: publishers, librarians, journalists, cultural managers and many others.
</p>
<p>
Over three days at the school-conference, participants got to know Kazan's rapidly developing book infrastructure – they went on tours of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books at Kazan Federal University, visited exhibitions and the bookshop at the Smena Centre for Contemporary Culture, and visited the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan, where they learned about the internal workings of one of the country's leading book institutions. They also took part in the Smena Summer Book Festival, explored new literary releases and exchanged experiences with colleagues.
</p>
<p>
The goals of the "Books Change Cities" conference are to bring together specialists and like-minded people from different parts of the country in one place to strengthen interregional communication and networking, to exchange experience and working tools, and to discuss book projects that are increasingly becoming drivers of territorial development and a form of sustainable growth for cultural infrastructure.
</p>
<p>
The special partner of the "Books Change Cities" school-conference is the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan – an institution that, over the years of its existence, has become an important urban space, an integral part of Kazan and a driver of its development.
