The performance "Karenina. The Trial" (16+) by Alla Sigalova, based on Leo Tolstoy's novel, was a true gift for the city's residents. "This is our first time in Nizhny Novgorod, which is very important for us, as this city is spoilt for theatrical art. Our performance has been running for several years; it is an entirely original adaptation by director Alla Sigalova," noted Natalya Mazur, Director of the Theatre of Nations. Sigalova offered an unexpected perspective on the production: the well-known story is explored through the lens of divorce proceedings, with three main protagonists—Anna Karenina, Alexei Karenin, and Alexei Vronsky. "It was important for me that, for the millionth time, the audience would reflect on who is truly to blame for the tragedy that occurred. My attitude towards Anna Karenina still constantly changes, because new arguments emerge that tip the balance either in her favour, or towards Vronsky or Karenin. I wanted to draw attention to the fact that in any situation, even one that sometimes seems unambiguous, there can be no simple answers," the director explained. "Anyone could find themselves in such a situation, both in the 19th century and today. Of course, divorce proceedings are simpler now, but it is still a very difficult experience," shared Sofya Ernst, who played the lead role. Alongside Ernst, the performance features Igor Mirkurbanov (Karenin), Ilya Deniskin (Vronsky), and Nikolay Samsonov (the lawyer). The director herself appears as the prosecutor, attempting to unravel the circumstances surrounding the Karenins' divorce. Production designer Maria Tregubova sets the action in a black-and-white space divided into two mirrored halves. Over the course of the performance, one half slowly rises perpendicular to the floor, gradually making the characters' existence impossible, and by the finale—downright dangerous. The tour was made possible thanks to SIBUR's "Formula for Good Deeds" social investment programme, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in February 2026. "This performance is our gift to Nizhny Novgorod from SIBUR. We are implementing this project as part of our major social investment programme 'Formula for Good Deeds'. Throughout this time, we have been developing seven different focus areas, from sports to ecology. Culture holds a special place in this formula," said Nikolay Dudukalov, General Director of SIBUR-Kstovo.
