SIBUR Presented "The Land of the Lapwing" Project at the All-Russian Nature Festival "Primeval Russia”

29 march 2021

March 27 saw SIBUR present its bird conservation project "The Land of the Lapwing" at the 8th All-Russian Nature Festival "Primeval Russia" in Moscow. The project is being implemented within the framework of the Formula for Good Deeds, the company’s social investment program.

Project coordinator Vladimir Shutilin explained that "The Land of the Lapwing" includes avian surveys conducted on SIBUR’s sites in Tobolsk, eco-lessons, and volunteering campaigns. Ornithologist Evgeny Zhuravlev, one of the experts of the Formula for Good Deeds program, made a presentation about the bird species encountered during the avian surveys in Tobolsk and invited everyone to visit and personally admire the unique nature of Siberia’s ancient capital.

As a rule, our observations in Tobolsk are scheduled to coincide with either the spring or the fall flybys of migratory birds. The most interesting encounters with birds at these times happen to occur along the banks of the Irtysh because the river’s valley is a kind of a natural migration flyway for many species of birds. Over the period of our observations, we have managed to observe mass migrations of birds of prey, and we were particularly impressed by the numbers of white-tailed eagles and golden eagles (both species are on the Russian Federation’s Red List of Endangered Species). And, of course, we encountered many species of waterfowl, commented Evgeny Zhuravlyov.

"Primeval Russia" is one of the most extensive and fascinating festivals celebrating Russia's nature. Over the course of a one-month period, unique photographs taken by nature photographers are put on display at an exhibition in Moscow. The festival features creative meetings, film screenings, popular science lectures, and round tables where scientists, photographers, and conservation experts exchange knowledge and share their experiences.

Our festival's principal goal is to showcase Russia’s nature, and that’s why we would only put on display photos that were taken in Russia. Through these photographs, our visitors can see and appreciate how beautiful our nature is and also how vulnerable it is. For the third year running, our festival has been actively promoting ecotourism, and projects like "The Land of Lapwing" are a way to showcase how unique Russia's natural wonders are and to make people ponder whether or not they should consider visiting them in person, noted Tamara Panteleyeva, the Festival’s Director.
