New species of bird sighted on the site of ZapSibNeftekhim

29 september 2022

ZapSibNeftekhim, Russia's largest petrochemical complex, took part in an autumn ornithological survey held to help experts assess bird habitats. In the course of the survey three species of birds that had not been seen there before were spotted in the area: a common gull (a member of the shorebirds order), a long-tailed tit, and a pine bunting (both are Passeriformes). In addition, the experts recorded, for the second time in the history of observations, a transitory sighting of the white-tailed eagle, a species that is listed in the Red Book of Russia.

We carry out annual ornithological surveys that help us assess the state of the fauna on the grounds of ZapSibNeftekhim. The experts invariably note that this area provides a comfortable living environment for local birds. We are glad that this year we managed to spot new species, and that the list of bird species at ZapSibNeftekhim has expanded even further. This is in part the achievement of all our employees who have been following ornithologists' instructions to a tee, Elena Belskaya, head of ZapSibNeftekhim's Department for Government Relations and Social and Economic Projects, commented.

This was the ninth ornithological survey of the petrochemical complex’s grounds conducted as part of the Territory of the Lapwing project that is being carried out under the auspices of SIBUR's Formula for Good Deeds social investment program. Surveys like this are conducted at least twice a year: in the spring, during the nesting season, and in the fall, in advance of the wintering period. Since 2019, a total of 89 bird species have been sighted at ZapSibNeftekhim and 77 nests of waders and other ground-nesting birds have been conserved.

We spotted 18 bird species in the course of this survey. Most of the observed species are migratory birds and they use the grounds of the enterprise during their autumn migration. Species such as the great spotted woodpecker, great tit, Eurasian blue tit, and long-tailed tit are wintering species and may stay on the grounds of ZapSibNeftekhim. The company has implemented all the recommendations for the conservation of habitats of the lapwing and a few other ground-nesting birds, and so no cases of loss of clutches or broods have been recorded in the course of using the property, Evgeny Zhuravlev, ornithologist and expert of the Territory of the Lapwing project, noted.
