How can I plant a tree and become a SIBUR eco-volunteer?

28 april 2022

As part of its series of webinars on corporate volunteering, SIBUR held a training webinar titled Ecovolunteering, or How to Plant a Tree? delivered with the support of the Formula for Good Deeds program.

The webinar dedicated to presenting the company's various projects that anyone can join as an eco-volunteer, was attended by the employees of ZapSibNeftekhim, Zapsibtransgaz, Krasnoyarsk Synthetic Rubber Plant, Petrochemical Transportation Company, Nizhnekamskneftekhim, NIPIGAZ, POLIEF, SIBUR, Sibur-Kstovo, SIBUR-Neftekhim, Sibur-PETF, and Tomskneftekhim.

An example of one such project is SIBUR's extensive reforestation and climate adaptation program, known as the
Green Formula, that seeks to reduce the company’s climate impact. Under its 2025 Sustainable Development Strategy, SIBUR intends to plant at least 5 million trees in the regions where it has operations and launch a pilot project to start producing carbon units.

In 2022, the Green Formula came to Nizhnekamsk. More than 100 volunteers took part in planting 7,600 tree saplings in the area adjacent to Akhtuba, a local village. Similar campaigns are going to be carried out in cooperation with local school forestry teams in Blagoveshchensk (Bashkortostan), Kstovo (Nizhegorodskaya Oblast), Nizhnekamsk (Tatarstan) and Svobodny (Amur Oblast). Additional information about the program is available on its
website.

Another similar project, known as
The Forest Formula, is being supported by SIBUR as part of its Formula for Good Deeds social investment program. Tatiana Damshayeva, the project’s manager, presented to the webinar participants information about the project’s various conservation and reforestation activities carried out for the benefit of the residents of Bashkortostan, Nizhegorodskaya, Tomsk, and Tyumen Oblasts, including a grant contest for schools and school forestries, volunteering sapling planting campaigns, eco-lessons for school students, and an educational program for teachers.

Svetlana Kulakova, Chair of Perm Krai’s Association of Ecologists and an
Ambassador of the Formula for Good Deeds program, shared with the audience her hands-on experience with organizing volunteering sapling planting campaigns. She also discussed the process of interacting with local authorities, and explained why and how to involve business partners, local residents, and students in such campaigns.

To assist volunteers, Alisa Safronova, a coordinator of SIBUR’s Volunteering Program, presented a
collection of SIBUR's best eco-volunteering practices. where corporate volunteers share their personal experiences and approaches to implementing their projects. This should help those who want to replicate these practices. The document includes description of campaigns against urban landfills, information on separate collection and recycling of waste, tips for urban landscaping, on helping animals and birds, and information about other projects of SIBUR’s volunteers.

During the webinar held just prior to the May holidays, the experts of the Formula for Good Deeds issued a Plant-a-Tree challenge. Its prospective participants are invited to:

  • Plant a tree and document it by taking a photo or making a video.
  • Post it on VKontakte and/or CLICK under the hashtags of #ПосадиДерево (Plant-a-Tree) #ВолонтерыСИБУРa (SIBUR’s Volunteers) and invite their followers to replicate this good deed.
  • Email the photo/video of the completed challenge to volonter@formula-hd.ru, accompanied by a description of any interesting facts about the picture-taking or filming process.

Each participant will be issued an e-certificate of a SIBUR eco-volunteer. All creative photos will be posted on the campaign’s page on the Formula for Good Deeds’ website. The most active challenge-takers will be invited to take part in the company's annual Volunteering Forum in Moscow. The challenge will run until May 22, 2022.

The third webinar will be dedicated to social design. It will be conducted at 10:00 am to 11:30 am Moscow time on May 11 via Skype for Business by the experts the Formula for Good Deeds program. They will offer practical advice on how to design a successful project, explain the terms of
