70 Perm residents vied for the Small Rivers’ Cup to score a victory over waste

2 september 2021

On August 28, Perm, with the support of SIBUR, hosted new Clean Games. In just 90 minutes, the participants of the waste collection competition collected 2,300 kg (or 282 bags) of waste in the valleys of Perm's rivers. Thanks to separate waste collection efforts, almost 9 bags of scrap metal, 108 bags of glass, 26 bags of plastic bottles, and over 300 kg of car tires were sent for recycling.

The Clean Games is a competitive event where teams perform cleaning and waste sorting. This is not the first time they were held in Perm. Thanks to the concerted cleaning efforts, the banks of Perm's Danilikha, Zelenka, Uinka, and Mulyanka rivers have become cleaner and attractive to local residents as recreation areas of choice.

Not only did the participants of the Clean Games collect an incredible amount of waste, but they also sorted it. In the end, more than half of the waste collected was sent for recycling. This is a perfect gift for the annual rivers’ birthday celebration, Andrey Kvitkin, an organizer of Perm’s Clean Games, shared.

SIBUR has been supporting these competitions as part of its Formula for Good Deeds social investment program. The games are hosted by several cities where the company has operations including Perm (Perm Krai), Svobodny (Amur Oblast), Blagoveschensk (Republic of Bashkortostan), Noyabrsk (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug), Nyagan and Pyt-Yakh (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Yugra). Competing teams are made up of local residents and SIBUR’s employees.

Environmental protection is one of the key areas of the Formula for Good Deeds program, with support to separate waste collection initiatives being a particular focus of our eco-themed social projects. The Clean Games help popularize the idea of responsible waste management, and so we are glad to be the project’s partner. The results of the August Games are certainly quite impressive and an inspiration for new residents’ initiatives, Tatiana Duregina, Government Relations Advisor to the General Director of Sibur-Khimprom, commented.

Upon completion of the tournament, the Small Rivers’ Cup was awarded to the "IT" team whose members were responsible for cleaning up the waters of the Zelenka River. In the 90 minutes that the games lasted, the team collected more than 30 bags of waste. The Yenoty (the Racoons), regular participants of the Clean Games, were voted the Games’ best family squad. They were the ones who retrieved the greatest number of spent tires from the Danilikha River.

The next installment of the Clean Games in Perm will be held on September 18, the World Cleanup Day.
