On 24 May, team car-based ornithological competitions – a birding rally – took place in the vicinity of Tomsk, organised as part of the "Chibis Territory" project of SIBUR's "Formula for Good Deeds" social investment programme. The project was first implemented in Tomsk in 2022, and the car-based birdwatching competitions have now been held five times.

This year, 8 teams and 26 participants gathered – both experienced ornithologists and novice birders. The rally route, more than 48 kilometres long, was designed to allow participants to observe birds in different habitats: forests, meadows, wetlands. From the Lagerny Sad to the biological station of Tomsk State University, experienced and novice birdwatchers searched for feathered creatures, making stops at checkpoints. For new participants, the route guide included descriptions of all the places where the likelihood of encountering birds was highest.

The "Chibis Territory" project has been implemented in Tomsk for five years now. Over this time, residents of Tomsk have repeatedly taken part in both walking and car-based competitions, and have also contributed to the improvement of the city by taking up the baton of making bird feeders as part of an annual online competition. More than 335 birders, both novice and experienced, have passed through the project. Many of them gladly return to the competitions year after year.

<i>"Despite the weather, our team of ornithologists – me, my mother and my grandmother – successfully completed all stages of the competition. The rain soaked our glasses and binocular lenses, and the camera fogged up. The birdsong was polyphonic but invisible to the eye. However, despite these inconveniences, we still saw an amazing number of ruffs. The males in their breeding plumage staged a tournament, jumping at each other surrounded by females. The flight of the flock, shimmering with white and monotonously variegated upper colouring, was a very beautiful and impressive sight. The spirit in the teams was competitive. A special big thank you to Sergey Ivanovich – a true treasure trove of ornithological knowledge."</i>
